The Kiani Foundation
for Ethics, Innovation, and Competition in Healthcare

Our Foundation

We support programs, initiatives, and research designed to improve patient safety and outcomes, promote efficient and cost-effective healthcare delivery, and provide advanced healthcare to people worldwide who may not otherwise have access to lifesaving technologies.

We focus our resources in areas where we can make the most significant difference, with special attention on organizations that share our belief that innovation, ethical conduct, aligned incentives, and healthy competition are integral to improving the quality, access, and cost of healthcare worldwide. We are most interested in bold ideas that seek to transform patient care and healthcare delivery systems.

Patient Safety Movement

In 2012, Mr. Kiani founded the Patient Safety Movement Foundation (PSMF) with a bold and urgent mission: eliminate preventable patient deaths worldwide. At a time when over 200,000 people die every year in U.S. hospitals—and more than 3 million globally—due to preventable harm, Mr. Kiani committed his leadership and vision to unite clinicians, hospitals, researchers, engineers, industry leaders, and policy makers in a global call to action. He convened the first Patient Safety Science & Technology Summit in 2013, featuring President Bill Clinton as keynote speaker, and launched the foundation’s audacious goal: ZERO preventable deaths by 2030.

Under Mr. Kiani’s guidance, PSMF has driven major shifts in the global patient safety landscape:

  • Publishing Actionable Evidence-Based Practices

  • Promoting data transparency in healthcare

  • Inspiring hundreds of hospitals and healthcare systems across the world to commit to measurable safety improvements

  • Collaborating with international leaders, including being a keynote speaker at multiple Ministerial Summits on
    Patient Safety

  • Explore ways to achieve better healthcare at a lower cost through healthy and robust market competition.

Elevating the Importance of Ethics in the Delivery of Healthcare - Including but not limited to grants designed to:

  • Promote ethical conduct across healthcare delivery systems in order to consistently put the needs of patients before individual, institutional, or corporate interests.

Fostering Innovation and Discovery - Including but not limited to grants for research that seeks to:

  • Transform the practice of medicine through breakthrough innovations that treat diseases, solve important unmet needs, and save lives.

  • Improve patient safety and enhance the quality of care through technological advancements, innovative approaches, and new protocols.
